In the age of technology, booking your own travel has never been easier.
Your credit card has become your gateway to the world and your own backyard as travel providers continually upgrade payment solutions that make old-fashioned paper tickets seem very, well, old-fashioned.
When it comes to booking rail journeys – in NSW at least – you have no less than five easy options to pay your fare. (And of course, booking early means you won’t miss out, especially during busy holiday periods).
OPTION 1: Book and Pay online
The quickest, most efficient and simplest way to get going on your next trip is to book and pay online at nswtrainlink.info.
This video walks you through how to do it, step by step.
If you are slightly nervous about submitting your credit card details over the internet, you can rest assured NSW TrainLink uses the very latest encryption technology to keep your information safe.
If you’re still wary or you don’t have a credit card, you can use the online services to find and book your journey but pay in person with option 2.
OPTION 2: Book Online and Pay at the Post Office
With this option you still get to take full advantage of the ease and convenience of researching ideal dates and times for your trip online – and reserving your seat/s – but you can physically pay at any Australia Post Office with the Pay It @ Post service.
Simply print or jot down the invoice code you receive after completing your booking and take it with you to the Post Office where you can pay by cash, credit card, debit card or EFTPOS.

OPTION 3: Book and Pay by Phone
If you’re not comfortable using a computer or would like to confirm a detail or two, you can of course pick up the phone to book and pay for a ticket.
Call NSW TrainLink on 13 22 32 and have your credit card handy to complete your booking.
OPTION 4: Book by Phone and Pay at the Post Office
If you don’t have a credit card but would like to pay by phone anyway, you can still take advantage of Australia Post’s Pay it @Post option.
Once your booking is complete, you’ll be given a code to jot down and then present at the Post Office to pay by cash, debit card or EFTPOS.
OPTION 5: Book Online and Pay Onboard
Finally, if there’s no other option that works for you, you can actually pay for your fare on board the train (or coach) if absolutely necessary.
Using this option, you would book your seat online but it should be noted that there are some restrictions on what concessions can be booked – and you would need to book within three days of travel – if you opt to leave payment until your trip is actually underway.
