We see them on every cruise – the ubiquitous lanyards worn by fellow passengers, as a way of safeguarding their precious cruise key card.
While onboard, we occasionally might even find the random key card, lost and abandoned, as if its owner wilfully relinquished their onboard identity, and along with it, the ability to re-enter their cabin or make another margarita purchase at the bar.
When this happens, it’s easy to imagine someone frantically searching for the card, or wasting precious ‘fun-in-the-sun time’ as they stand in a long line at the reception desk to get the key card replaced.
But this is 2017, and Princess Cruises has come up with an innovative way to enhance the guest experience.
So, put aside those multi-coloured lanyards, leave your key card holder at home, and forget about all those pesky paper receipts and time spent swiping and signing just to get a drink. Princess has something exciting on the way.
Ocean Medallion
Starting in November this year, guests sailing on Regal Princess, Royal Princess and in early 2018, Caribbean Princess, will enjoy the latest feature, the Ocean Medallion.
Replacing the typical key card, guests will be provided with a wearable device slightly smaller than an Australian twenty-cent piece. It features interactive technology that gives its wearer access to a multitude of services.
Best of all, the attractive Medallion can be accessorised. It can be worn as a necklace, bracelet, or can simply be attached to a handbag or carried in a pocket.
Princess offers a variety of sporty and elegant looks with the bracelet and wrist band options. Men’s styles resemble a classic watch or modern Fitbit. The medallion can be fully immersed in water, so it can be left on when swimming too.

What to expect onboard a cruise
Ocean Medallion benefits
So what exactly does Ocean Medallion do? For starters, it allows for quick and easy boarding and disembarkation from the ship. It also works as a ‘key’ to your state room. Simply approach your door with the medallion and your cabin door unlocks for you.
It also allows you to make onboard purchases without the use of a key card, paper or signature. Purchases are automatically linked to your account information stored on the device.
More convenience
There are plenty of other benefits as well. The medallion links to touch screens throughout the ship as well as to the TV in your state room. If you wish, you can even pair it with your own mobile device.
No matter where you are on the ship, you’ll be able to order food and drinks through your mobile or ship touchscreen device.
Dinner or spa reservations, as well as tours can also be booked this way.
Find a friend
As ship’s get bigger and bigger, guests are finding it increasingly difficult to locate friends or family members on board. Just go to your preferred touchscreen and the Ocean Medallion will locate them for you. No more walkie-talkies required!
