Wherever there’s a Back-Roads tour, you can be sure there’s an adventure to be found around every corner.
Few places offer the cultural enrichment of Thailand and Back-Roads Touring has just the tour for those with a taste for good food and a penchant for fun, fascinating history and stunning scenery.
This tour includes five days in the cosmopolitan Bangkok and travels north along the River Kwai from Kanchanaburi.
Bustling Bangkok is defined by its street life, where food vendors cook up the spicy flavours Thailand is known for. Street markets provide a flair all their own, with everything from fresh produce and spices to silks on display.
Travelling around the city by tuk-tuk, Back-Roads’ guests will enjoy a unique foodie tour which highlights the best of Thai cuisine.
For a revealing look at Bangkok, a rooftop restaurant in one of the city’s towering skyscrapers offers not only commanding views but a unique dining experience.
There’s nothing like the perspective that comes from viewing the city on a canal tour though. View old canal homes and temples along quiet canals typically reserved for the locals. Now THAT’S the Back-Roads way.
This tour includes a scenic ride down the Chao Phraya River for a visit to the magnificent temple of Wat Arun, a seventeenth-century Buddhist temple surrounded by ornate spires.
From city lights to rural life, the Back-Roads journey continues to Ban Nong Khao Village and Kanchanaburi. The cultural aspects of the region come alive during a traditional lunch with a local family and an evening stay at a riverside camp.
In Kanchanaburi, highlights revolve around the region’s involvement in World War Two. Perhaps the most well-known site is the structure known as ‘the Bridge over the River Kwai.’
Built by allied prisoners of war, the infamous bridge was the start of the ‘Death Railway,’ a rail span connecting Thailand with Burma for the Japanese war effort.
Back-Roads includes many fascinating World War Two sites in the tour, including the JEATH (Japanese, English, Australian, American, Thai, Holland) War Museum. After a stop at the Bridge, you’ll transfer by boat to the River Kwai Jungle Raft, a unique floating hotel providing gorgeous views of the natural Thai scenery.
As the sun sets on your last night of the tour, you’ll relax to the sites and sounds of an authentic MON dance and music show.
