Known for their creative, big-budget air safety videos, Air New Zealand’s latest may seem a little tame in comparison, although still entertaining as always.
As travel writers, we are lucky enough to do a lot of flying, which thankfully I enjoy. And we do see our fair share of airline safety videos from airlines around the world.
While some are entertaining, others are simply informative and to-the-point of safety. And I will never admit to sleeping through any of them!
But when it comes to safety videos, Air New Zealand certainly stand-out from the crowd with their witty and eye-catching, full-scale productions. More of a big budget short-film than a 4-minute safety video.
The Kiwi carriers latest video has cast an all-star lineup of homegrown talent, which highlights the tourism hot-spots in the Northland region of New Zealand.
Inspired by the classic Kiwi road trip, the latest video follows the adventures of Shortland Street’s Jayden Daniels as he travels around Northland’s Bay of Islands and Hokianga, encountering a host of friendly locals, famous faces and iconic attractions along the way.

Air New Zealand General Manager of Global Brand and Content Marketing Jodi Williams says the video will put the Bay of Islands and the wider Northland region on the wish list for millions worldwide.
“One of our goals at Air New Zealand is to inspire visitors to travel beyond the traditional gateways to discover the warm welcome and breathtaking landscapes on offer in our regional destinations.
“Our safety videos have an impressive global following, collectively attracting more than 100 million views and gaining significant international media exposure. This latest edition is a great opportunity to not only deliver a safety message, but also to showcase the very best of the North to help drive economic benefit for the region.”

Air New Zealand’s ‘classic’ safety videos
While this latest safety video certainly gives us inspiration to travel, it does seem a little tame by comparison to those of past. But no matter the video, Air New Zealand always has a way of making passengers sit up and take notice.
So buckle-up, sit back and relax with a selection of our favourite safety videos.
The Hobbit
The Hobbit safety video turned heads (towards the TV monitors that is) when it was released. Filmed in multiple Lord of the Rings Middle Earth locations around the country, it’s filled with all the Hobbit adventure and madness one would expect.
Old School Style
Betty White has always been a crowd pleaser and in this video, she takes you through the safety instructions, old school style. One of our all-time favourites!
Richard Simmons mile-high madness
If Air New Zealand are the king of safety videos, then it only made sense to have the king of camp featured in an all disco, all dancing, colour filled safety video. Featuring the 1988 Yazz pop-classic ‘The only way is up’, this is one fun-filled safety video.
The Bear essentials
Taking you on an adventure through New Zealand’s Routeburn Track, is the ultimate adventure enthusiast himself, Bear Grylls. Filmed in various locations along the South Island track, keep a look out for a creature long-thought to be extinct.
