1. Limit your alcohol intake
As the air humidity in the cabin is lower than what we are used to on the ground, drinking alcohol causes us to become dehydrated, one of the contributing factors of jet lag. Enjoy that glass of wine with your meal, but save the drinking for your destination.
2. Avoid caffeine in the air
Similar to alcohol, caffeine causes a dehydration effect on the body. It may also prevent you from sleeping and resting during your flight, leaving you more tired on arrival. Save the tea and coffee for the last in-flight service before you land.
3. Drink lots of water
Headaches are an unwanted flying companion, which are usually caused by dehydration. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and refreshed. Don’t worry if you need to get up for the bathroom, as exercise will increase your circulation and keep the body moving. (see point 4)
4. Exercise throughout the flight
Sitting in one position for a prolonged period decreases your body’s circulation. An affect of this is Deep Vein Thrombosis, a dangerous condition that left untreated could cause hospitalisation or worse. Walk the cabin aisles periodically during the flight. When sitting, wriggle your toes, make small circle motions with your ankles and neck; just to keep the circulation flowing and to remind your tired limbs that they are still there.
5. Sleep well prior to departure
Sleeping well the few days prior to departure will allow you to feel more relaxed and rested during the flight. While in the air, nap or sleep whenever your body allows. The more rested you are before and during your journey, the more refreshed you will be when you arrive at your destination.
6. Wear comfortable clothing
Nothing is more uncomfortable than not being able to shift or adjust in your seat due to tight clothing. For maximum comfort, wear loose clothing that won’t wrap or twist around your body.
