In upper Burma on the bend of the Irrawaddy, explore the lively markets at Nyaung U before visiting the archaeological sites in Old Bagan, where hundreds of temples were built by the kings of Bagan between 1057 and 1287. After passing through the Tharabar Gate of the old town, visit the Htilominlo and Thatbyinnyu Temples. Finish at the museum to explore the history of the area in your own time.

The shrine of Mount Popa Monastery, also known as Taung Kalat, is located on top of a volcanic plug 1,518-metres above sea level.
