Buried for centuries beneath metres of volcanic debris, the once thriving Roman cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii were destroyed in AD79 when the force of Mount Vesuvius unleashed her deadly fury.
The fate of the two cities was the same. Destroyed first by an earthquake in AD62, the towns then had the bad luck of being fossilised from the smoldering ash that came with the Vesuvius eruption.
The towns were rediscovered in 1709, but it wasn’t until 1927 when serious archaeological work began. Today, the two cities are popular attractions, where tours lead visitors through the ancient streets. Frozen in time, the cities remain much as they were, on the day Mount Vesuvius blew its top.
Both cities rested on the Bay of Naples, a two-hour drive south of Rome. Noted for its scenic beauty, the land is dominated by steep volcanic hills, while idyllic islands can be found in the glistening bay.
With Naples to the north and Sorrento to the south, the best way to enjoy the bay is onboard a traditional gullet boat – a two-masted wooden sailing vessel made from mahogany and iroko.
The gullet boat used by Back-Roads Touring has six air-conditioned cabins, all with en-suite facilities and a spacious dining area. Your personal crew and chef over the 8-day sailing voyage will look after your every need, with traditional meals prepared using the day’s freshest of ingredients.
You’ll also find onboard canoes and fishing equipment for use, as well as a TV, DVD, CD and MP3 player and a choice of games for your entertainment – if you can drag yourself away from that insatiable view of the bay that is.
Your sailing adventure begins from Marina di Stabia, just a short transfer from Naples, where you board your private vessel and meet the friendly crew over cocktails on the sundeck. Soon after, a welcome dinner kicks off the journey.
On day two, you will set sail for Sorrento for a walking tour. Perched atop steep cliffs overlooking the busy marinas, the city is known for its stunning bay views and quaint café-lined streets. You’ll return to the boat around mid-day to enjoy a fresh lunch, before heading towards the harbour of Pozzuoli.
